How Chiropractic Treatment Can Help With Headaches

Our West Vancouver Chiropractor treats headaches regularly at our Ambleside Chiropractic Clinic in West Vancouver. Headaches tend to pop up out of the blue; in the morning over a cup of coffee, or after a long day at work. Headaches might be infrequent, or seem to be happening every day. Perhaps the pain is dull and long-lasting, or sharp and acute. Everyone suffers from different headaches and no two days are the same.  Some people suffer from headaches almost every day, and some hardly at all.

There isn’t always a direct cause or correlation between the headache you’re suffering and why it started in the first place. Ambleside Chiropractic Clinic based in West Vancouver is here to explain how and why headaches occur and how modern-day chiropractic techniques treat it.  We’ll also offer some expert tips and advice on how to prevent headaches. Sometimes it’s worth putting down the pain-pills for a better solution.

Why Do Headaches Happen?

Although modern scientific medicine has quite a good reason as to why headaches occur, most of the headaches treated by our West Vancouver Chiropractor start from the neck.  Many headaches, known as primary headaches, often concern muscle tension headaches, cluster headaches, and migraines.

Some headaches are caused by external triggers such as your choice of food, stimuli like bright lights, loud noises or general stress caused by work, lifestyle, and behavior. These causes can include things like exercising too much, not drinking enough water, or having a poor sleep pattern. These are easily managed, and often it’s quite easy to tell when your activity has caused a headache.

The modern human spends an awful lot of time sitting down. Whether it’s on the computer at work or merely commuting in a car, bus, or train, headaches can slowly creep up on you.  Sitting down after a long stressful day at work in front of the TV can also contribute to a sedentary lifestyle that has terrible implications on the health of your neck. General muscle tension and irritation combined with constant screen-watching is the most common cause of headaches in the 21st century.

West Vancouver Chiropractor Recommendations For Headaches

There are a few simple things you can do to relieve neck and head muscle tension and ease headache pain. Number one method? Stretch! It’s that simple!

If you spend a long time every day sitting down in front of a computer, a television, or even after a long train journey, there is something you can do.  The simplest solution to avoid getting a headache is a quick stretch. This simple stretch is enough to relieve tension in your head and neck. You should stretch at least once or twice an hour.  If you do not know how to stretch your neck muscles, call our Ambleside Chiropractic Clinic. Our West Vancouver Chiropractor will be happy to show you how.

Next up, water!  Medical professionals and health experts alike recommend you drink at least eight glasses of water a day. If that seems unfeasible it’s a good idea to take a flask of water to work or out with you when you leave the house. More water means less dehydration, which means fewer headaches.  A good rule of thumb is drinking two to three liters of water a day for an adult.

A regular exercise regimen is a good option, as well.  Although if you know that high-impact exercise (such as sprinting or hitting the gym) gives you a headache, stick to those forms of working out that aren’t as intensive. Swimming, walking and playing a sport are a good option for those who have experienced throbbing and painful headaches with high-impact exercises.

In cases where you wake up with a bad neck pain together with a headache, our West Vancouver Chiropractor can treat both complaints at the same time.  This type of headache is usually known as a cervicogenic headache.  Tight muscles or even the vertebral joints that are out of alignment in your neck are the cause of this type of headache.  These joints are known as facet joints, and a simple chiropractic adjustment to mobilize and free up that affected joint will offer immediate mobility and reduced pain.  Not only will your headache go away but your neck pain will disappear as well.  Our West Vancouver Chiropractor has had many years of experience with this treatment.  The recommendation to treat cervicogenic headaches involves spinal manipulation, exercises, stretches, and massage. You should however always discuss this treatment with a professionally trained chiropractor as each case is individual to the patient.
